Phipps W Hartwell--Who is his father?

PHIPPS W HARTWELL--WHO IS HIS FATHER?

The parents of Phipps W. Hartwell, my 3rd great grandfather, are listed in various family trees as Peter Hartwell and Olive Waldo.  I believe this may be incorrect as Olive Waldo Hartwell, born 23 Nov 1853, would have been approximately 52 years old at his birth.

I have been unable to find a birth or christening record of Phipps W. Hartwell.  However, his age in the 1850 Census[1] in Randolph, Columbia County, Wisconsin is 44, which translates to a birth year of 1805/06.  In the 1860 Census[2], same place, his age is given as 51, which would indicate a birth year of 1808/09.  The 1875 state census for Mower County, Minnesota[3], where he is living with his daughter Maria Burton, gives his age as 65 for a birth year of 1809/1810.  His death record[4] in 1880 gives his age at death as 76, for a birth year of 1804.

Olive Waldo was born 23 Nov 1853 in Windham, Tolland, Connecticut to John Waldo and Jemima Abbott.  She was the second of nine children.  Her older brother was named Phipps Waldo.  He was shot and killed a few days before his 24th birthday at a court-house gathering on the Mohawk River in Albany County, New York on 17 January 1776.[5]  It would be very natural for Olive to name one of her sons Phipps Waldo for her brother who was killed.
There are, however, at least two Hartwells named Phipps.  One went by Phipps and the other by Phipps W.
The elder Phipps Hartwell was born about 1775 in New York as he is listed in the Lafayette, Walworth county, Wisconsin 1860 Federal Census[6] as being 85 years old.  He is living with his son Daniel Hartwell, age 59, born in NY, Daniel's wife Elizabeth, and six children ages 13-28.  The 1870 Census[7] lists Phipps as age 95 and he is still living with Daniel in Lafayette.  Of interest is one of Daniel's sons is named Waldo.  In the 1830 Census for Granville, Washington, New York[8], Daniel Hartwell is 20-29 years old, as is his wife, and a daughter is under the age of 5, which reinforces that they came from Granville, Washington, New York.

The elder Phipps Hartwell's wife was named Olive and her death is recorded in the History of Walworth County Wisconsin: "June it, 1838, Olive wife of Phipps Hartwell, Lafayette".[9]

This Phipps Hartwell died 27 Feb 1872 in Lafayette.[10]

There is only one Phipps Hartwell, that I could find, listed anywhere in the Federal Census for 1830 and 1840 and he is in Granville, Washington County, New York.

The 1830 Census[11] lists 3 males ages 10-14, 20-29, and 50-59.   In 1830 Phipps W. would have been 25.  He could have been the male age 20-29.  Although I do not have a marriage record for him, he is estimated to have married some time that year as his eldest dau Marinda was born the following year on 3 July 1831.  There are 2 females ages 10-14, one 15-20, and one 50-59.

The elder Phipps would have been 55.  It is likely this is his family and he is the male age 50-59.  His son Daniel is listed in a separate household in this census, in the same locality.

The 1840 Census for Phipps Hartwell[12] lists only one male in the family, age 60-69.  This cannot be our Phipps W who 35 and has three boys under age10.  The family lists two females 20-29, one age 60-69, and one age 80-89.  Phipps W's wife Laura is about 30, so although she could be one of those age 20-29, his nine-year-old daughter Marinda is definitely not included.  This reinforces this is not Phipps W's family.

Olive, the wife or widow of Peter Hartwell and the likely mother of the elder Phipps, is 87, so the elderly female could be her.  Phipps is 65—We have him in Wisconsin as early as 1838 when his wife Olive dies, but it is possible he returned to New York briefly, especially if his father Peter had died.  (This is the only Phipps Hartwell of any spelling that comes up on the 1840 census in any of the states.)

Family records state Phipps W. Hartwell's first wife was Laura and that his oldest four children were
1.      Marinda (my 2nd great grandmother), born 3 July 1831 in Granville, Washington, New York; died 1870-71 in Virginia City, Nevada

2.      Daniel, born about 1833, possible Civil War soldier, not living at time of father's probate in 1880

3.      Martin, born 23 Aug 1835, a Civil War veteran who died at a Soldier's home in Los Angeles, California, 11 March 1918, and

4.      George Washington Hartwell, born 4 May 1836 in Granville, Washington, New York; died 27 Dec 1884 in High Forest, Olmsted, Minnesota.

My Phipps W. Hartwell appears in Wisconsin records when he buys 243 acres in three transactions on 1 May 1848 at the Green Bay land office.[13]

His first appearance, however, was as Philipp Hartwell in a marriage to Arasina Chaffee on 24 Aug 1845 in Dodge county, Wisconsin.[14]  I believe this is our Phipps W.  His death record also lists him as Philip, instead of Phipps, and his wife is listed as Alzina and Arozina in different Census records.

In the 1850 Federal Census for Randolph, Columbia County, Wisconsin, he is listed as Fitz W Hartwell, farmer, age 44, born in New York, with his wife Alzina, age 21, from Vermont, and 3 children all born in Wisconsin:  George, 14 (which fits in with George Washington Hartwell above), Mary, 3, and Maria, age 1.[15]

In the 1855 state census for Randolph, Columbia, Wisconsin, Phips W Hartwell is the head of household and there are 2 males and 4 females in the home.[16]

The 1860 census of the same place gives Phipps W's age as 51.  Arozina is 32, Mary E is 13, Maria M is 11, and Matilda M is 8.[17]  Next door is George W Hartwell.

Phipps W. and Arasina/Alzina Hartwell's children are:
5.  Mary E. Hartwell, born 17 Nov 1847 in Randolph, Columbia, Wisconsin; married George W. Phelps 19 Nov 1865 in Courtland, Columbia, Wisconsin; died 7 May 1933 in Watertown, Jefferson, New York.

6.  Maria Hartwell, born 26 Nov 11849 in Randolph; married Joshua Burton 13 Jan 1872 in Olmsted county, Minnesota; died 10 Jun 1920 in High Forest, Olmsted, Minnesota, and

7.  Matilda Hartwell, born 1852, likely in Randolph; married William Atwood 10 Nov 1881 in Hennepin county, Minnesota.

Arasina/Arozina/Alzina died sometime between 1860 and 1875 since in the 1875 Census for Mower county, Minnesota, Phipps W. Hartwell is living with his daughter Maria Burton.  He seems to have continued to live with her until his death five years later.

Phipps W. Hartwell died 12 October 1880 in High Forest, Olmsted County, Minnesota at the home of his daughter Maria Burton.[18]   He died without a will.  The value of his personal property is under $248 and he has no debts.  Four children survive him:  Martin Hartwell, Mary E Phelps, Maria Burton, and Matilda Hartwell.  Three children of George W Hartwell, his son now deceased, are named: Ida Warren, Alva Hartwell, and Mina Hartwell, age 13.  There is a petition for letters of administration to be given to Joshua Burton, dated 2 Dec 1885.

The Report of Deaths for Olmsted county, Minnesota, lists Philip Hartwell as dying Oct 13, 1880, widowed, age 76, born in New York, cause of death Old age, place of death High Forest, occupation farmer.[19]  This is the only Hartwell listed as dying in 1880 in Olmsted county, Minnesota; therefore the clerk from Olmsted County believes the Philip is miswritten and should be Phipps.
Could Phipps W. Hartwell be the son of Phipps Hartwell?
Daniel, who we know was Phipps' son, was born about 1801 (age 59 in 1860 census) and Phipps W was born anywhere from 1804 to 1810.  Both Phipps W. and Phipps (as well as Daniel) were born in New York state and both lived in Wisconsin, although I found no record to indicate they ever lived in the same county in Wisconsin.  Perhaps Phipps and Daniel came first (Phipps' wife Olive died in Lafayette, Wisconsin in 1838), with Phipps W following later since he is not mentioned in The History of Walworth County, Wisconsin.  Phipps W named his oldest son Daniel in 1833, and Daniel named his oldest son Walter Waldo in 1837.
